The Harborage Inn in Boothbay Harbor is a testament to the hard work and perseverance of Serbian-born innkeepers Alex and Maria Nikolic. They moved to Maine from Serbia in 2014 and started working in Maine’s hospitality industry as housekeepers. Both worked to move up the ranks to hold positions as general managers at inns in York and Portland.

In 2020, the couple purchased The Harborage and started transforming the already charming B&B into one of the premier luxury boutique properties in the village. The couple’s European background influences their welcoming approach with their guests.

One of the defining amenities guests are treated to during their stay is a gourmet breakfast, made to order and delivered to their suite. Some of the featured European-inspired dishes include chocolate Belgian waffles with seasonal berries, French crepes, almond-scented French toast with crispy bacon, and savory Mediterranean omelets with Greek feta, tomatoes, onions, and herbs.

The Harborage is an ideal property for visitors who love walking to local shops, restaurants, bars, breweries, galleries, lobster shacks, and scenic charter boat experiences. At night, guests can also enjoy the inn’s hot tub that sits at the water’s edge and gaze out at the illuminated, historic harbor footbridge sparkling like Stevie Nicks’ lyrics, “like a diamond snake in a black sky.”

Where to eat and drink: Maine lobster and crab roll fanatics should visit Shannon’s Unshelled for some of the freshest handhelds in the harbor. Mine Oyster’s outdoor deck is a great place to enjoy a dozen chilled bivalves or a Japanese-inspired maki roll. If speakeasy-style cocktails and whiskey flights are in your wheelhouse, stroll down Townsend Avenue to NEAT, a bar situated on the backside of Marcel’s Submarine Shop.

Things to do: Jump on an e-bike from Pedego Electric Bikes and cruise to Ocean Point for a bit of exercise and sightseeing. Hop aboard Cap’n Fish’s puffin and whale watching cruises. Catch live performances across the street at the Boothbay Opera House. Be sure to make reservations for all these activities.
