The Squire Tarbox Inn is an impeccably curated, centuries-old property located off the beaten path on Westport Island. Originally established in the mid-1700s by the English-born Tarbox brothers, the 12-acre property still encompasses the rural feel that attracted the siblings to Maine.

After extensive renovations completed in 2018, the Inn’s current owners, Houston, Texas–based friends Lisa Dalton and Michelle Adams, have made sure no two of the 11 guest rooms look alike. But all are filled with natural light and decorated in soothing, modern but muted tones. The women created an overall welcoming atmosphere with inviting common areas for sitting and taking teas, and multiple outdoor spaces where guests can safely co-mingle. There is a deck overlooking a sweeping lawn, a fire pit with a view of the pond, and private trails that lead into a salt marsh. Guests can even hang out with the goats and chickens in their barn.
To engage with Maine residents who don’t necessarily need a place to stay, the Squire Tarbox offers dinners in its renovated 1820s event barn that include wood-fired pizza on Monday nights, a winter soup series, and wine and beer dinners in conjunction with local chefs and producers.

If you’re in the area to stay with them or simply passing through, the folks at the Squire Tarbox Inn have a few recommendations for what to do while you’re in the area.
