Historic Charm Meets Modern Sophistication

Perched above the scenic beauty of Camden, overlooking Penobscot Bay, The Norumbega stands as a testament to the timeless charm and elegance of New England’s rich history. Initially built in the late 19th century, this historic building was a private residence for almost 100 years before being transformed into a bed and breakfast in 1984. Over the decades, its owners have been intent on preserving the original design and architecture. In 2022, Will Tims and Brett Haynie took renovations a step further and revitalized it to unite its celebrated past with contemporary sophistication.

A Glimpse Back

In 1886, The Norumbega was constructed by duplex telegraph inventor Joseph Barker Stearns as his private home. This European-style castle was inspired by the many opulent homes he visited during his travels throughout Europe. With no expense spared in the design, it was dubbed “The Stone Castle by the Sea,” though Stearns named it “Norumbega” after the mythical city of gold found on early maps from the 16th century. “Norumbega” was believed to be located somewhere along the eastern coast of North America along a great river. Since the Penobscot River empties just north of Camden, the name adds to the glamour and mystique of this storied inn.

A New Era

The Norumbega has entered a new chapter under the ownership of Tims and Haynie, who have a wealth of experience in the hospitality and design industry. From the beginning, their vision has been centered on revitalizing the inn’s offerings while preserving its historic character. This approach is evident in every detail, from its preserved fireplaces and carved banisters to the added Italian fixtures and grand piano.

Each of the 11 rooms combines period details with contemporary design and amenities. Many rooms feature original architectural details such as intricately carved woodwork, high ceilings, and large windows that offer stunning views. The Library Suite, once the personal library of the original owner, contains hundreds of books on shelves accessed by a catwalk above the sprawling king-sized bed. High-quality linens, plush bedding, and elegant bathroom amenities complement the luxurious guest experience at The Norumbega.

Tims and Haynie pride themselves on personally greeting and getting to know each guest. “They really appreciate the one-on-one owner contact; it makes it so much more special for them and more fun for us. We love it,” says Tims. Unsurprisingly, every staff member at the inn is dedicated to exceptional service and attention to detail, from providing recommendations for local attractions and eateries to delivering personalized amenities that cater to a guest’s preferences.

A Culinary Twist

The Bar at The Norumbega adds a new dimension to the inn. Open to the public, it serves small plates on the terrace and in its beautifully redesigned bar room. Adding a unique flair is Peruvian native Chef Marymarcel Densmore, whose delicious Peruvian-inspired shared plates emphasize fresh, local ingredients. Standout dishes include a local Halibut Ceviche finished with leche de tigre and Sesame Miso Shrimp Spring Rolls served with a watermelon cilantro soy vinaigrette. For something sweet, try Densmore’s decadent Tres Leches Cake.

At The Bar, enjoy classic-inspired cocktail creations, occasionally served up by Tims or Haynie themselves. Try the Penobscup, a Maine twist on the historic Pimm’s Cup cocktail, first created in England in 1823 as a health tincture. There is also a carefully selected wine list and local beer selection. The Bar’s small plates service is open Saturday through Tuesday, 4:30–7:30 pm. Reservations are recommended by calling 207-236-4646.
