Spring Gin Smash

Feature Image by Christopher Ellis-Jacobs

Our “Spring Gin Smash” cocktail, featuring Maine-made gin, honey syrup, and fresh herbs, is basically Maine springtime in a glass.

As the days get warmer (mud season does eventually lead to patio season, we promise), it’s time to toast with something refreshing. Meet the Spring Gin Smash, an easy cocktail that’s herbal, citrusy, and just sweet enough – kind of like a mojito’s Maine cousin. We’re using a locally distilled gin (pick your favorite Maine gin – there are some great ones out there!) plus honey syrup in place of simple syrup for a floral touch of sweetness. Muddled fresh herbs (mint and a sprig of thyme, for example) give it that green taste of spring. This drink comes together in minutes and will have you thinking of blooming gardens and sunny afternoons on the porch. Cheers to spring!

Makes

1 drink

Ingredients

  • 2 oz Bimini Coconut gin Handcrafted by Round Turn Distilling in Biddeford
  • ½ oz maple syrup
  • ¾ oz fresh lemon juice take some peel for garnish
  • 6 fresh mint leaves plus an extra sprig for garnish
  • 1 small sprig of fresh thyme plus an extra sprig for garnish
  • Splash of club soda optional, for a lighter “spritz” style smash

Instructions

  • In a cocktail shaker, add the mint leaves, thyme sprig, and lemon juice. Gently muddle with a muddler or the back of a wooden spoon for about 15 seconds to release those refreshing herb oils and juice. (Your kitchen will smell like a spring garden!)
  • Add the gin and maple syrup to the shaker. Fill the shaker with ice cubes, then put on the lid and shake vigorously for 15 seconds. The shaker should get nice and cold (and your hands might, too!).
  • Put a handful of crushed ice into a rocks glass (or use ice cubes if that’s what you have). Strain the shaken cocktail into the glass over the ice. If you like a spritzier drink, top with a splash of club soda.
  • Slap a fresh mint and/or thyme sprig between your palms (this wakes up the aroma) and tuck it into the glass as garnish. Add a lemon twist if you’re feeling fancy. Now sip and enjoy – it’s like tasting Maine springtime.

This Spring Gin Smash is bright and botanical, with the maple giving it a dark sweetness. Feel free to experiment with herbs: basil or rosemary can also shine here, depending on what’s popping up in your garden. And for a zero-proof version, simply omit the gin – the honey-herb-lemon combo topped with seltzer makes a lovely homemade mocktail. Here’s to longer days, greener views, and something tasty in your glass!
